At 1am this morning, I decided at random that my life was thoroughly lacking in teeny tophatness, and so I set out to make one. This is the result:
I'm really pleased with how it turned out. The top is wider than the base, and it's on a little bit of a wonky slant, but I think that adds to the Mad Hatterness of it. I used thin card for the shape base, rolling it into a cylinder, and cutting a big circle for the brim. I then wrapped felt around the cylinder, gluing it together at the back with PVA glue, and stitched a circle of felt the same size as the end of the cylinder to the top.
For the brim, I wrapped purple felt around the card base and stitched it together. The felt became a little gathered, but that's the only way I could think to do it, and it adds a nice effect. After all the glue was dry, and I'd reinforced all the stitching, I wrapped a ribbon around it with a cameo button on, and tied in a bow at the back. I got a pack of 5 plastic cameo buttons from a craft shop. I stitched some old metal hair clips to the bottom to wear it.
I didn't take any pictures while making it (stupidly -__- ) but I am thinking of making another once I get some more metal hairclips and felt, so I'll take some pictures and maybe do a tutorial then. I am also thinking of perhaps adding some more decoration to this hat. Here is a closer picture.
On another note, the Speed Demo Archives are running right now. SDA is a group of youtube gamers all getting together and running 5-7 days solid of live streaming. They stream speedruns of games mainly, but also do a lot of other silly things, like dancing, dressing up, gaming races, etc. They also give away prizes.
This is all to raise money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Although I don't have any money to donate, I am watching and I want to help support the cause, so I may as well spread the word. It's worth a watch if you're a fan of video games. You can watch it here: http://www.twitch.tv/speeddemosarchivesda?utm_campaign=live_embed_click&utm_source=speeddemosarchive.com
I hope everyone had a lovely Saturday!

Repo! Meets Emilie Autumn!
I was browsing the interwebs as usual today, and stumbled across an ad for "The Devil's Carnival" with the description" Repo! Meets Emilie Autumn," and as you can imagine, I squeed and clicked on it. It led me to a blog post (I can't find that post again, sorry!) questioning what the Devil's Carnival actually is, which then gave me another link leading to the official website, here:
http://www.thedevilscarnival.com/
The website doesn't really explain it much. I'm assuming it's either a movie or a stage show (In which case I hope they either tour the north east of the UK in the summer holidays with very low ticket prices, or it's just a movie.)
Whatever it is, if it is a dark carnivalesque show and has the creators of Repo! behind it, Terrance Zdunich in it (I'm assuming he will be), Emilie Autumn in it, and is as pretty as the teaser, I am going to love it! <3
And on that note, I hope everyone has a lovely day!
Repo! The Genetic Opera review
Here is my review of Repo! as promised. I'll begin with a synopsis of the story, however I can't promise it'll be spoiler free, so please skip this section if you don't want to know what happens. Also, the story is quite long and complicated, so bear with me! xD
Repo! The Genetic Opera is a rock opera set in the not-so-distant future. An epidemic of organ failures devastates the globe, and GeneCo, a company that replaces failed organs, quickly becomes the biggest and richest company out there.
However, the prices of the organ replacements are so expensive, that if people cannot pay them off within a certain time, a Repoman is sent to retrieve the organs. Due to the expense of the organ transplants, meaning that generally only the rich and famous can afford them, transplants and modifications become a fashion statement.
There are 3 main stories that all weave together. A young girl called Shiloh. has been diagnosed with a blood disease all her life - the same disease her mother died from - and is therefore not allowed to leave the house because of her overprotective father. However, curiosity gets the better of her, and she often tries to escape.
Her father Nathan is secretly a Repoman, and doesn't want his daughter to find out about the horrors in the outside world. Ever since his wife, Marnie's tragic death 17 years ago, he has driven himself almost insane about losing his daughter.
Meanwhile, owner of GeneCo, Rotti Largo, is told he has a fatal illness, and will die soon. While he debates over who to leave his company to, he realises that his 3 children - Amber, a slut and drug addict, Pavi, a face stealing narcissist, and Luigi, a madman with anger issues - are not the best heirs to GeneCo. He remembers that his ex lover, Marnie - Yes, the same Marnie that married Nathan and died later - had a child, and wants to offer her the company.
When Marnie left him for Nathan all those years ago, he was furious. Marnie fell ill while pregnant with Shiloh, and Nathan, being a doctor at the time, created a remedy. Seeing the opportunity for revenge, Rotti poisoned the remedy, killing Marnie and framing Nathan with murder. Nathan managed to save Shiloh, but to get out of the murder charges, Rotti asked him to work for him as a Repoman.
Now back in the present, Rotti invites Shiloh to the opening of the "Genetic Opera", where she meets Blind Mag.
Blind Mag was the best friend of Marnie 17 years ago. While Marnie was dating Rotti, she asked him to replace Mag's eyes so she could see. In return, Mag worked as the company's official singer, appearing in adverts and shows for GeneCo. As life went on, she realised the contract was lifelong, and wanted to leave, but as she could not afford the surgery she had on her eyes, she is told that after her final show, a Repoman will come to repossess them.
Mag was made the godmother of Shiloh, but due to Nathan's overprotectiveness, he told Mag that Shiloh had died along with her mother. Shiloh, having seen Mag on TV, is excited to meet her idol in person. Mag is completely stunned to find that Shiloh is alive. After meeting her, Shiloh is pushed into a nearby tent and told to wait there. She is helped to escape by Graverobber, a character she bumped into when she first attempted to escape, who also happens to be the narrator of the story....Kindof. xD
Graverobber is a drug dealer that sells "Z", or Zydrate. Zydrate is a highly addictive drug that the doctors invented to help people deal with pain after surgeries. It is also very expensive, but a cheaper version can be obtained from dead bodies, hence he is a graverobber. xD
Graverobber takes Shiloh to a backalley full of Z-addicts, when Amber Sweet shows up, gloating about how she's going to be the new singer of GeneCo when Blind Mag is gone. Alarmed by this news, Shiloh asks her what she means, and all is explained through a really catchy song. Amber's bodyguards show up, and all the Z-addicts scatter. Graverobber takes Shiloh home.
At the same time, Nathan is told to come to Rotti's office to recieve a special target. When he realises the target is his wife's best friend, he refuses, but Rotti guilt trips him, reminding him of "what he did to Marnie."
Mag arrives at the house to finally meet her God-Daughter. Shiloh tells her she isn't allowed visitors, and tries to warn her of the Repomen. Nathan returns, having been out repossessing organs (although Shiloh believes he is just a doctor.) Nathan orders Mag to leave, Mag obliges, but is extremely confused and annoyed over the secret of her God-Daughter. Shiloh begs her dad to let Mag stay so she is hidden from the Repoman. Mag leaves, and Nathan orders Shiloh to tell him how she found out about Repomen. Shiloh finally stands up for herself, telling her father she doesn't want to be bossed around anymore. They argue, Shiloh passes out from lack of medication and is put to bed before Nathan leaves.
When Shiloh wakes later, she recieves a call from Rotti, inviting her to tonight's Genetic Opera, and Mag's final song, offering her a cure for her disease if she does. She sneaks out. Nathan also prepares for the opera, or rather, killing Mag after her final performance. Mag gets ready to sing her final song.
And I won't spoil the ending. >:3
OK END OF SPOILERS, YOU MAY READ FROM HERE! XD
I told you the story was long and complicated. I've probably still made mistakes and missed out details, but oh well. Just go and watch it yourself! XD
I'd actually heard a few songs from the Repo! soundtrack before I saw the movie, mainly At the Opera Tonight, Chromaggia, and Infected. Having fallen in love with the few songs I'd heard, I decided to watch the movie, and it was most definitely worth it.
I was immediately caught up in the gothic atmosphere - The costumes of the actors, the dark but cyberesque setting, and of course the music. If you're a fan of cult movies and gothic subculture, this is definitely a film for you.
The choice of actors and the acting itself is absolutely fantastic, with Alexa Vega from Spy Kids playing Shiloh, Anthony Stewart Head from Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Nathan, Sarah Brightman as Blind Mag (If you don't know who she is, you should be ashamed! She was in the original Phantom of the Opera!) and Paris Hilton playing Amber Sweet - Yes, yes, I know she's a silly blonde bimbo, but she actually plays a good part in this movie, don't let her put you off! Terrance Zdunich, one of the main writers of the story and the artist that drew all the comic strips explaining various parts of the story, plays an amazing (and very good looking might I add xD) Graverobber.
All the songs (with the exception of one) are well written, each complimenting each other and running through the film smoothly. My favourite song is Zydrate Anatomy, one, because Graverobber sings it and Terrance has a fantastic voice and two, because it's just so damn catchy! Really, once you hear it, it's stuck in your head for days afterwards.
My only gripe with the music was Shiloh's song "Seventeen." It really doesn't fit the flow of the movie, and it doesn't do wonders for Alexa's singing voice either, which is much better in songs like "Infected" and "Genetic Emancipation."
The main reason I listened to some of the songs before watching the movie was the fact that I'd heard it was very gory, and I don't tend to cope well with gore. xD Although it was a plus for me, it might be a bit of a downer for others, but the gore in the movie, to put it bluntly, is crap. Really, the blood is bright red and completely unrealistic. Pan's Labyrinth made me go "eurgh D:" more than Repo did. So if you're looking for a gory film, this isn't the best. If you're like me and you don't like gore very much, then it's a bonus.
Overall, I'd say this is one of my favourite movies. I can rant about how much I love this film all day, but really the only way to know about it yourself is to watch it. It's quite an underground film, so finding a copy might be difficult. I found a single, lone copy in HMV one day, and my boyfriend bought it for me. Because it isn't a mainstream film it wasn't really that expensive. However, there are plenty of copies being sold online, and if you're lacking in money there is a version on putlocker, and I believe there is another version in parts on youtube, although I would only try that if you're absolutely desperate and genuinely can't find it anywhere else, as the quality is not the best, and sometimes movies get taken down. If you're struggling to find a link to watch it, leave a comment and I'll find you a decent quality version online somewhere.
Phew! Long post over. XD I know it's late, especially since the movie came out a few years ago, but I felt like I had to post my opinions on Repo! before I post the related topic, which is coming up next. To finish, enjoy this picture of Rotti and his badass henchgirls.

End of 2011!
I know I haven't posted in a while (usual excuse, I was busy xD) but I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas, and is currently having a great new year's eve! Only one more hour to go.
So to sum up this year, I made a list of the highlights (and some lowlights, but they're all in there for a reason), and a couple of resolutions I'll hopefully keep next year, unlike previous years:
At the beginning of the year, obviously, I celebrated new years with my family! Followed by finishing art coursework and heading back to school to study for my GCSEs.
I turned 16! :D I spent my 16th birthday sleeping over at a friends house, and we did a playing card queen photoshoot.
I spent Valentine's Day with my lovely boyfriend. :3
I finished and passed all of my GCSEs with good grades, and left school.
I went to prom...
And Alton Towers (even better!)
Throughout the school year, I had a lot of fights with friends, and evidently they became not my friends. However, I have no regrets about all this becaaauuuse...
I started college!
And I made lots of wonderful new friends, with people that actually respect me for who I am.
I celebrated my 2nd anniversary with my lovely boyfriend :3
I enjoyed a fantastic Christmas with my friends and family, and got a sewing machine.
I improved my artwork, in both drawing and photography.
And best of all, I got to dress up, on more than one occasion >:3
Overall, I'd say I've had a fantastic year, and hopefully next year will be just as good, if not better!
So to finish off, here are a few resolutions~
1. Keep fit! Ever since I started college, I've lost my weekly hour of PE, and I really should try and do something to exercise in its place.
2. Enjoy the time I have with my wonderful friends, as I've learnt this year that you never really know how good or bad things are gonna get.
3. Celebrate a 3rd anniversary with Nizz :3
4. Pass my AS levels, with good grades.
5. Dress up even more >:3
6. Improve my art skills even further!
But most importantly, enjoy the year, no matter what happens.
So Happy New Year everyone, I hope 2012 is the best year yet!

Fancy dress day!
It's very difficult to keep up a blog AND make sure I get all my college work done D: I'm not doing too well in some subjects right now, so I've really been concentrating on work.
Anyway, today was the children in need fundraising day! And we had fancy dress at school. I went as a pirate :3
I took an old long sleeved school shirt, cut the collar and cuffs off, and then ripped it up a lot. On my legs, I wore some wet-look leggings (although they're quite worn now, not as shiny. :c ) And pirates have to have some boots! So I wore my lovely mid-calf doc martens.
I wore more bangles than you can imagine; obviously it's all gold I have pillaged on my travels, and my black fingerless gloves with skull and crossbones on, along with a bandana, and an eyepatch I made out of felt and some thread.
I put some mini-braids in my hair, and stuck a bead on the end, inspired by Jack Sparrow of course. I love pirates, so the costume was lots of fun to wear (I'm actually still wearing it xD)
Everyone elses costumes were amazing too! I got some photos:
It was £1 to come in fancy dress, and £2 to come in regular clothes. A lot more people came in normal clothes than fancy dress, but I'll just assume they were feeling generous, rather than way too lazy to get a costume sorted...
All in all, it was a good day! I hope everyone else had just as good a Friday :3

Art update
It makes me really sad that I don't have as much time to draw what I want anymore, especially with taking art for A level, as mostly everything I draw revolves around that now.
However, I started keeping an A5 sketchbook to doodle in whenever I'm stuck in a queue, long car journey, or sat in costa while my friends all drink their coffee and I try to distract myself from almost throwing up due to the smell. (I really, really can't stand the smell of coffee.)
Since it's half term, I've managed to get one or two A4 drawings done, but I thought I'd upload some of my sketchbook stuff too.
They're all Halloween related in some way. I'm really in the Halloween spirit this year. xD Hope everyone has a nice Wednesday!

Halloween Ideas for the absolutely skint! : Halloween Chinese Lanterns
Hello! Sorry for not updating in a looong time, college has been taking it's toll. -__-
However, it's my half term this week, and it's almost Halloween! Halloween is definitely my favourite event of the year, after Christmas, of course. Unfortunately, this year I don't have any plans, and Halloween is on a Monday, when I go back to school. Ugh!
Anyway, I decided I'd still celebrate it at home, and decorate my room a little. As I have absolutely no money whatsoever, I've been making my decorations, and thought I might post a step by step guide on everything that I make.
Today I made some paper Chinese Lanterns (Note: These lanterns are paper replicas of real chinese lanterns, and cannot be lit, so don't even try. I don't wanna be responsible for any accidents!) and now my floor is covered in glitter. Hooray!
So, let's begin shall we? To make one, you will need:
A few sheets of A4 card, in the colour of your choice
A ruler
A pencil
Scissors
Glue
Tape
Felt tip pens
Glitter (it's optional, but I love the stuff!)
And a workspace that you don't mind getting completely messy. xD
Step 1. Depending on how large you want your lanterns to be, you can either cut the A4 sheet in half to make A5 card, which makes much smaller and cuter lanterns, in my opinion, or you can stick to the regular A4 size and make bigger ones.
Once you've decided how big you want your lanterns to be, fold the card in half lengthways like so.
Step 2. Now is the best bit. Decorate your lanterns with whatever you like. I used a black felt tip pen to draw little black bat silhouettes and stars on, and then put glitter around the top and bottom edges, but you can decorate them however you like.
Step 3. While the card is folded, cut straight lines from the fold upwards, but do NOT cut all the way to the top. If you want your lanterns to be particularly organised, you can measure and draw on some guidelines with a ruler like I did, but again, it's optional. If you're feeling particularly dangerous, why not cut a wavy lane, or a zigzag and see how that turns out?
Step 3. You should now have something like this! This is the point where you can add some more detail, if you wish, or rub out any pencil guidelines you left behind.
Step 4. Take each side of the card and roll it around on itself to make a cylinder, like so. Stick the two edges together using glue or tape. (I used double sided tape, I find it holds better, but regular cello-tape works fine.)
Step 5. Push the two ends of the cylinder towards each other, so the slits in the card spread out. You should have something looking like this.
Step 6. Now to make a handle. Cut a a long, fairly thin strip of card in a matching colour.
Stick one end of the strip on the inside of the lantern. Bend the strip over so that it reaches the other side, and stick it down there too.
Step 7. You should now have a lovely paper lantern! The only thing left to do is hang it up somewhere. You may want to make a few, as I did, and string them across a room, or you could even attatch them to a stick of wood, and use them as part of a witch costume. You can probably think of tonnes of other ideas.
If anyone makes any of these, please link me a picture in the comments, I'd love to see how other people's turned out. I hope you all have a lovely Tuesday, and a great Halloween!
Hooray!
| Uuugh, horrible quality camera, I am sorry! |
| Oh god, the glitter! |
Stick one end of the strip on the inside of the lantern. Bend the strip over so that it reaches the other side, and stick it down there too.
